“گیلبرت مارکهام” پسر یک کشاورز نجیب زاده ی فقید است که در همسایگی “هلن گراهام” زندگی می کند. “گیلبرت مارکهام” کاملا شیفته ی زیبایی ، متانت ، ذکاوت ، خوش اخلاقی “هلن گراهام” شده و آن ها تقریبا هم سن هستند. “گیلبرت مارکهام” برای رفتن به ملاقات “هلن گراهام” اغلب بهانه ای می تراشد و سرانجام عشق غیرقابل انکار خود را به او ابراز می کند. اما هلن درخواست او را رد می کند و احساسات هر دوی آنها جریحه دار می شود. اما آینده ی این عشق تب دار چه خواهد بود؟
“مستاجر وایلدفل هال” اثری است فوق العاده از “آن برونته” که به وسیله ی آن هم حقوق خدشه دار شده ی زنان در دوران سخت گذشته را به تصویر می کشد و همه به جهان ثابت می کند که به اندازه ی خواهران بزرگترش، نویسنده ای با استعداد است.

«کتاب خوب، فارغ از جنسیت نویسنده‌اش خوب است. همه رمان‌ها باید هم برای مردان و هم برای زنان نوشته شوند. من هرگز متوجه نمی‌شوم چگونه مردی می‌تواند چیزی که برای زنان ناخوشایند است بنویسد و یا چرا یک زن باید از نوشتن هرچیزی که می‌تواند یک مرد را به انسان بهتری تبدیل کند، منع شود.»- آن برونته «مستاجر ملک وایلدفل هال» نوشته آن برانته(۱۸۴۹-۱۸۲۰) نویسنده و شاعر انگلیسی و کوچک‌ترین خواهر برونته‌هاست. این رمان به باور بسیاری از منتقدین یکی از نخستین رمان‌های فمنیستی است. یک زن بیوه، همراه با پسر و خدمتکار خود به وایلدفل هال می‌آید. مردم شهر داستان‌های عجیبی در مورد او و زندگی گذشته‌اش تعریف می‌کنند اما گیلبرت مارکهام، که دل به او باخته است تلاش می‌کند تا این داستان‌ها را باور نکند. اما با گذر زمان دچار تردید می‌شود که آیا اعتمادش به جا بوده است؟…. در بخشی از کتاب می‌خوانیم: امروز هوا مانند روز قبل ابری و بارانی بود، اما نزدیکی‌های شامگاه هوا بتدریج صاف شد و صبح روز بعد هوا مطبوع گردید. من هم با وسایل درو به بالای تپه رفتم. نسیم ملایمی ساقه ذرت‌ها را تکان می‌داد و طبیعت با نور آفتاب خانم به روی آدم لبخند می‌زد. کلاغ زاغی‌ها با حرکت لکه‌های ابر در آسمان شفاف آبی در پرواز بودند. گیاهان چنان تمیز شسته شده و با طراوت بودند که حد نداشت و کشاورزان را بر سر شوق آورده بود. اما تمامی این زیبایی‌های طبیعت نمی‌توانست جراحتی را که خانم گراهام با آن برخوردش در دل من به وجود آورده بود، التیام ببخشد. من هم در حالیکه با قلبی شکسته ایستاده و به ساقه‌های ذرت‌ها می‌نگریستم، ناگهان احساس کردم که لبۀ کت‌ام آهسته کشیده می‌شود و همزمان صدای ظریف بچه‌گانه‌ای را شنیدم که دیگر برایم لذت‌بخش نبود و گفت: «آقای مارکهم، مامانم با تو کاری دارد.»
