درباره کتاب The Scorpion God :
“The Scorpion God” is a collection of three novellas written by Nobel Prize-winning author William Golding. Each novella is set in a different time and place, but all explore the themes of power, violence, and human nature.
Three short novels show Golding at his subtle, ironic, mysterious best. The Scorpion God depicts a challenge to primal authority as the god-ruler of an ancient civilization lingers near death. Clonk Clonk is a graphic account of a crippled youth’s triumph over his tormentors in a primitive matriarchal society. Envoy Extraordinary is a tale of Imperial Rome where the emperor loves his illegitimate son more than his own arrogant, loutish heir.
The first novella, “The Scorpion God,” is set in ancient Egypt and tells the story of a young prince who must prove his worthiness to become king by capturing a live scorpion with his bare hands. The story explores the relationship between power, violence, and the abuse of authority.
The second novella, “Clonk Clonk,” is set in the English countryside in the early 20th century and follows the experiences of a group of boys on a hunting trip. The story explores the themes of violence, masculinity, and the destructive power of group dynamics.
The third novella, “Envoy Extraordinary,” is set in a fictional African country and follows the experiences of a British diplomat who is tasked with negotiating a treaty with a powerful local leader. The story explores the themes of power, imperialism, and cultural clashes.
Throughout “The Scorpion God,” Golding employs his signature style of vivid, introspective prose and a deep understanding of the darker aspects of human nature. The collection is a powerful exploration of the complexities of power and violence, and their relationship to human society and individual behavior.
