تاریخچه هفت قتل ( A Brief History of Seven Killings ) نوشته شده توسط مارلون جیمز در سال ۲۰۱۴ منتشر و در ۱۳ اکتبر ۲۰۱۳ برنده جایزه من بوکر شد. مارلون جیمز اولین نویسنده جامائیکایی هستش که توانستهاین جایزه رو به علاوه دو جایزه دیگر ادبی از جمله جایزه کتاب امریکا را در همان سال ببرد و موفقیت بزرگی برای سومین کتاب این نویسنده جامائیکاییست.

پس زمینه داستان ماجراهای مربوط به تلاش برای ترور باب مارلی، خواننده مشهور جامائیکا در اواخر دهه هفتاد میلادی است که در طول سه دهه پس از آن، در مسیر زندگی سردسته های باندهای مواد مخدر، نمایندگان پارلمان، آدمکشان حرفه ای، ملکه های زیبایی، روزنامه نگاران و حتی کارکنان سیا حادثه های فراوانی برملا می شود.نویسنده با الهام از این روایت توانسته مسائل سیاسی جامعه جامائیکا که در دهه‌های ۱۹۶۰ تا ۱۹۹۰ رخ  داده است را  روایت کند . مارلون جیمز در این کتاب توانسته به مسائل مختلف جامعه آن دوران جامائیکا از جمله تضاد طبقاتی ، خشونت و قاچاق مواد مخدر و  همچنین تلاش‌های سیا برای کاهش قدرت جناح سیاسی چپ در دهه ۱۹۷۰ و قاچاق کراک در دهه ۱۹۸۰ به آمریکا بپردازد.

جمیز داستان کتاب را از زبان راوی‌ های مختلفی بیان کرده و این کار باعث جذابیت بیشتر داستان و همچنین پیچیدگی آن شده است. همچنین حدود ۷۵ شخصیت مختلف در این داستان گنجانده شده که شامل اعضای باند مافیا، افراد سیاسی، پلیس، قاچاقچی‌ های مواد، اعضای باند موسیقی و چندین آدم مختلف دیگه می باشند.

درباره مارلون جیمز (Marlon James):

مارلون جیمز متولد سال ۱۹۷۰ در شهر کینگستون جامائیکا است. اولین کتاب داستانی او “شیطان جان کرو” بود و دومین کتابش با عنوان “کتاب زنان شب” جایزه ادبی صلح دیتون را در سال ۲۰۱۰ دریافت کرد و در همان سال از جمله نامزدان جایزه ملی منتقدان بود.

نظر هیئت داوران: عنوان کتاب به خوبی وزن و پیکره عظیم این داستان را منعکس نمی کند. این داستان تخیلی پهناور که از هزارتوی سیاست و خشونت های تبهکاران در جامائیکای دهه هفتاد سر برمی آورد به دلیل شخصیت ها و حکایت هایش هیجان انگیز است: متکبر، بی رحم، طعنه آمیز، شوخ، مرثیه وار، لطیف و حتی کفرآلود است. و چه داستانی، خواننده را از خود بی خود می کند.

نظر منتقدان: روزنامه دیلی تلگراف نوشت: “این کتاب به دلیل خشونت بی امان، صداهای چندگانه و عزم نویسنده اش برای بازنویسی تاریخ یادآور یکی از آثار جیمز الروی با عنوان گروه چهار نفره لس آنجلس است.”

نشریه «نیویورک تایمز» نیز این رمان را شبیه به بازسازی «تارانتینو» از فیلم «روزهای سخت‌تر خواهد آمد» (محصول سال ۱۹۷۲ سینمای جامائیکا) با آهنگی از «باب مارلی» و با فیلمنامه‌ای از «الیور استون» و «ویلیام فاکنر» توصیف کرده که به اعتقاد آن‌ها، «اثری استثنایی، پررمز و راز، منحصر به فرد، جامع و بسیار پیچیده است.»
