این داستان در میان روستاهای مردم ایگبو که در دهه ۱۹۲۰ جنوب نیجریه مستقر شده اند واقع شده است.این داستان با  جنگ بین دو منظقه روستایی همجوار اومارو و اوکبری در اگبولند آغاز میشود.گرچه ما مرزهای اوکبری را نمی دانیم ، اما می دانیم که اومارو از شش روستا ساخته شده است. این شش روستا با پرستش خدای مشترک ، اولو ، مرتبط هستند.

مردم اومارو با اوکبری در زمینی که خواهان آنند ، جنگ می کنند. آنها توسط یک مرد ثروتمند به نام نواکا ، که خدای اولو را به چالش می کشد ، تشویق به شروع جنگ می شوند. این جنگ بر علیه کشیش خدای اولو که اوژلو نام دارد شروع شده است
