Then a single passenger, the obsequious Reverend Colley, attracts the animosity of the sailors, and in the seclusion of the fo’castle something happens to bring him into a ‘hell of degradation’, where shame is a force deadlier than the sea itself.

During the journey, Talbot encounters a diverse cast of characters, including the ship’s captain, Mr. Anderson, and a group of emigrants who are being transported to Australia as part of a penal colony. The novel explores themes of class, power, and morality, as Talbot grapples with his own privilege and the harsh realities of life on board the ship.

As the journey progresses, tensions rise between the passengers and crew, culminating in a dramatic event that forces Talbot to confront his own beliefs and values. The novel ends with Talbot arriving in Australia, forever changed by his experiences on the ship.
